SNAP for Food
Though many of us may not realize the grave disparities that exist in our own communities, people struggle with hunger in every county in Colorado. Feeding America reports, “In Colorado,
566,490 people are struggling with hunger – and of them 155,120 are children.”
If your household needs food, help is available. One program our state offers is SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), formerly known as Food Stamps. SNAP provides food
assistance benefits as part of a federal nutrition program to help households purchase food.
Most low-income households can get food assistance. To see if you qualify for SNAP benefits, complete an online pre-screening tool. The pre-screening tool is not an application. If you
are interested in applying for SNAP benefits, you can do so at their website (shown below). You can also apply for benefits online at Colorado PEAK. These applications are automatically
submitted to your county office.
Eating well is fundamental to good health and our well-being. Eating good foods helps us to maintain a healthy weight and reduces our risk of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high
cholesterol and the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and some cancers, as reported by experts. It is also essential for proper development in children. No one should go hungry.
Please ask for help if you need it.
