Section 22 Conversion Update – Where We Are Now
A Look at Progressive Housing Solutions
Last year, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) approved the SMHO repositioning of 71 scattered-site, public housing units to better serve the community. The process supports two initiatives in Littleton: affordable for-sale homes for the public, and new affordable rental homes for the city’s seniors and persons with disabilities.
Both initiatives serve a growing need in Littleton to:
- Decrease the current housing gap that is in the thousands
- Further support at-risk community members
- Provide affordable homeownership opportunities for years to come
Fifty-nine (59) of the scattered site single-family homes and duplexes are being sold to individuals and families working with Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver. Habitat for Humanity is also managing the updates and repairs, and managing the long-term affordability requirements. This partnership also gives Habitat for Humanity their first-ever development opportunities in Littleton.
“In our 41 years of existence, we had never built or renovated a single home in Littleton,” shared Kate Hilberg, Director of Real Estate of Habitat for Humanity.
With home prices in the metro Denver area reaching record highs, becoming a first-time homeowner in our city has become increasingly difficult. This program provides a hand-up to families so they can get their foot in the door and purchase a home in the metro area.
The Section 22 Conversion process is an important step in realizing our organizational goals, while working to improve affordable housing options, and continue supporting Littleton as an inclusive community.
