Building Dreams: One SMHO Resident’s Journey
In a world where dedication and focus are key to achieving one’s dreams, Nicholas exemplifies the transformative power of education and community support. Over five years ago, while employed at a local market, SMHO resident Nicholas yearned for a fresh start and a chance to reshape his future. “I just wanted to do something different,” he reflects. With a resolute mindset, he embarked on an educational journey through Arapahoe Community College (ACC), driven by a personal commitment to self-improvement and growth.
Nicholas enrolled in an Associate’s degree program and enriched his newfound appreciation for education with subjects like public speaking, psychology, and art. “I enjoyed public speaking because I did better in that class than I thought,” he shares. Despite the joy he found in learning, the path was not without its hurdles. There were times he wrestled with the urge to give up, compounded by the complexities of financial aid management. “The biggest hurdle was, for some reason, I wanted to quit at least once every semester,” he admits. Yet, the support systems in place, particularly the financial benefits he received, played a crucial role in keeping him on track. “If it wasn’t for me being able to qualify for benefits, I don’t know where I would be,” he acknowledges, highlighting the importance of accessible support systems.
A pivotal element in Nicholas’s success was the stability offered by his residence at Bradley House. “I am most grateful for my living situation,” he states. The affordable housing provided a secure foundation, allowing him to concentrate on his studies without the burdens of housing insecurity. This support became an integral part of his educational journey, enabling him to reach his academic goals. “If it weren’t for Bradley House, I wouldn’t have had success in graduating,” he confides.
Beyond financial and housing support, Nicholas credits his perseverance to his faith and the myriad of resources at ACC. “I sought help from everywhere and everyone at the school,” he explains. The Office of Disability Access Services became a pillar of support, employing him as a work-study student, which he describes as a “major help” that gave him reason not to quit. He also regularly sought assistance from professors and tutors, valuing both academic guidance and the understanding that “it was okay to not be okay.”
Nicholas graduated with an Associate of Arts degree. Reflecting on his achievements, he feels a profound sense of accomplishment. “I know I did something in my life,” he says, viewing his educational experience as a significant milestone. His journey was fueled by a desire to accomplish something worthwhile, not just for himself, but for the broader community. “Setting out in life to do something worthwhile, difficult, and hopefully useful to others,” he notes, was both the goal and outcome of his journey. For those contemplating a similar path, he advises, “Go for it,” emphasizing that “education serves its purpose in many ways.”
As Nicholas steps into the next chapter of his life, he looks forward to more leisure activities like reading and participating in Special Olympics golf. His journey is a powerful illustration of how determination, combined with the right support, can lead to significant personal growth and success. It exemplifies the critical role that community resources and accessible education play in empowering individuals to realize their potential and achieve their dreams.
